FitFuture Parent Newsletter: Turn Your Diet Green in 4 Easy Steps

Written by Claire Turner | Jul 2, 2015 2:39:23 PM

It's important for your children to eat foods that will support growth, development, and good health. But eating healthy, and keeping your diet 'green' can be difficult.

With a few changes and minor adjustments, a green diet can be easy. Check out this month's FitFuture Parent Newsletter and turn your diet green in 4 easy steps.

Shop the perimeter

The perimeter of any grocery store is most likely to contain healthy, natural foods. Fruits, vegetables, fish, poultry, dairy - the fresh food is on the fringes, the packaged, processed foods are in the aisles.

If you can't read it, don't eat it

Avoid foods with more than five ingredients you can't easily pronounce. There's a difference between what is food and what is just edible. Keep in mind that naturally healthy foods often don't even need a Nutrition Fact Label or ingredient list.

Grow your own food

Producing your own food saves you money and reduces carbon emissions. It also gives you a chance to teach your children about gardening, nutrition, and cooking!

Buy local

Shop at your local farms, farmers markets, or food cooperatives. The best food is the food less-traveled. Websites like LocalHarvest.org make it easy for you to find local food services near you.
